McCollum Park Improvement Project Open House

Fri August 6, 2021

The community is invited to attend the McCollum Park Improvement Project Open House meeting between the hours of 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at the McCollum Park playground (in case of inclement weather, the Open House will be held under the Picnic Pavilion just south of the basketball courts).

In May 2019, the Downers Grove Park District held an Open House meeting to present plans for a new sprayground and other improvements at McCollum Park. At that time, the Park District had completed preliminary designs and intended to begin construction in fall 2020; however, in April 2020, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the District stopped all design work and postponed the project. The Park District had also submitted a grant application to assist with funding the project, but chose to withdraw the application due to uncertainty regarding the pandemic’s potential length.

With the return to Phase 5 and re-opening of our parks and facilities, the Park District is now planning to resume design work and re-submit the State grant application! The District’s consultants, Hitchcock Design Group, have updated designs for the sprayground and other needed park improvements, including renovated tennis courts with new energy-efficient LED lighting, a new concession plaza, picnic shelters, and resurfacing the perimeter pathway. In anticipation of applying for the State grant, the designs will be presented to the Board of Park Commissioners on August 19, 2021, and the District will be hosting another Public Open House meeting at McCollum Park.

Feel free to stop by at any time during the Open House from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 12, 2021, at the McCollum Park playground. Park District staff will be available during this time to discuss the design concepts, answer questions and receive your feedback regarding this exciting project!

If you have any questions, or are unable to attend the Open House and would still like to provide feedback, please email Paul Fyle, Superintendent of Planning, at
