Grazers return to Belmont Prairie Buffer

The grazers are back in town!

For the eleventh year, goats and sheep are back to graze the natural areas maintained by the Downers Grove Park District. These hardworking animals will assist with natural brush management over 6 acres at the Belmont Prairie Buffer on Walnut Avenue. They will be at the Belmont Prairie Buffer until August 21, or sooner if they clear the invasive plants quickly.

The District has partnered with Vegetation Solutions, a Wisconsin-based green business specializing in vegetation management through controlled grazing.

The herd will graze in each paddock, eating a variety of plants including common buckthorn, honeysuckle, roses, spotted knapweed, Queen Anne’s lace, and even poison ivy. During their visit, they will clear approximately 6 feet of browse line, reducing the growth height of these invasive species and allowing favorable plants to thrive.

The livestock will be contained by a low-voltage electric fence. The District asks visitors to keep themselves and leashed dogs away from the fence. Remember, the goats are working during their stay—please look, but don’t touch.
