Description

Constitution Park is a 5.2-acre site which contains the Lincoln Community Center and parking lot, plus a playground to the west of the Center and an open lawn area south of the parking lot. In 1974, the Park District purchased the historic Lincoln School and the land adjacent to it. After converting the building into what is today the Lincoln Center, the rest of the site was developed into a neighborhood park.

In 2024, a uniquely designed playground was installed featuring wheelchair-accessible ramps, sensory experiences and more to enhance inclusive play at Constitution Park. In addition, a new walking path and pavilion brings much-needed amenities for all to enjoy at this site. In partnership with the Downers Grove Public Library, a StoryWalk® along the pathway provides an innovative and delightful way for children (and adults) to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time.

History

In 1987, the Constitution Commission of the Village of Downers Grove suggested that a park site be named Constitution Park in honor of our Constitution's Bi-Centennial anniversary. The Village and the Park District both agreed to this suggestion, and offered six unnamed parks to local kindergarten – eighth grade students to vote on which park would receive this honor. Their choice was to rename Gilbert Park, but many local residents opposed this, as they believed it had been named in honor of Norman Gilbert, an early resident of the Village. As a result, the Village and Park District went with the students’ second choice, which was the land adjacent to the Lincoln Center. The site was named Constitution Park, and shortly thereafter, the first play equipment was added.
