Park District receives donation from area family

DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. –The Downers Grove Park District received a donation of outdoor fitness equipment in early January 2012 from the Vachaparambil family, area residents who frequently use McCollum Park.

Hours: Dawn to Dusk except evenings when permitted lighted activity (operational, artificial lighting) is occurring. The park will close immediately after lights are turned off until dawn the following day. No person shall remain in park system unless a permit is granted in advance. McCollum Park is the largest and most heavily used park in the Park District. Two most recently developed play areas have equipment and surfacing that are both ADA accessible and CPSC compliant. Other facilities in this park include restrooms, a concession stand, an 18-hole miniature golf course, an approximately 1.2 mile jogging/walking path around the entire park with an associated fitness course, four lighted baseball/softball fields, two batting cages, three soccer fields, two lighted sand and volleyball courts, ten lighted tennis courts, lighted horseshoe pits, a shuffleboard court and a shelter for picnics.

Project Summary

McCollum Park - Infrastructure Renovation
Replacement of aging park amenities, including sports field lighting, sports field irrigation, ballfield backstops, ballfield core area plaza, new core area restroom & concession building, playground seating plaza, enlarged replacement picnic pavilion, and parking lot expansion. Project completion is anticipated to be July 2012.

Project Status  

July 21, 2011 – Park Board awards construction contracts for nine scope packages.  Construction to commence in August, 2011 with anticipated completion of July 2012. 

August 2011 – Construction manager’s mobile office is set up at McCollum Park.  Work commences on parking lot expansion area, including tree removal, construction fence & silt fence installation, and topsoil removal.  Upcoming work includes underground utility (water & sewer) installation in parking lot area.

September 14, 2011 – The contractor has completed installation of storm sewers under the parking lot expansion area, and are ready to begin installation of water main in this area that will extend to the new restroom/concession building in the Baseball Core Area.

September 23, 2011 – Construction fence is installed at the playground seating area.  Work taking place in this area includes removal and replacement of paving, benches and planters adjacent to the playground; however, the existing playground equipment will remain in place, and will be open to the public during construction.  Temporary access to the playground will be from the south, and a stone pathway has been installed to direct park users from the north parking lot to the playground entrance.  Tennis court colorcoating will occur in the spring and be completed by June 1st.

October 4, 2011 – Construction fence is installed at the Baseball Core Area between fields.  Work taking place in this area includes removal and replacement of paving, planters and backstops, plus installation of a new restroom/concession building.  The contractor began installation of the water main section extending from the parking lot to the Core Area.

October 18, 2011 – Concrete curb and gutter is installed in the parking lot expansion area.  With curbs now in place, installation of the crushed stone base and asphalt pavement in this area is anticipated to begin next week.  Other work recently completed includes removal of the existing picnic shelter, and removal of pavement and concrete planters in the playground seating area.

November 2, 2011 – The asphalt contractor has completed installation of the stone base and asphalt binder course in the parking lot expansion area.  A final “surface course” of asphalt will be added near the end of the project, to provide a clean, smooth surface when opened to the public.  Other recent work includes installation of the water main segment from the playground to the baseball core area.

November 16, 2011 – Recent activity includes removal of existing backstops and fencing in the baseball core area, forming and pouring of new concrete planter walls in the playground seating area, and installation of concrete driveway and curb along Main Street.  Later this week the contractor expects to begin excavation for building foundations.

November 30, 2011 – Recent activity includes the excavation, forming and pouring of all concrete foundation walls and footings required for the Restroom/Concession building, plus most of the footings for the Picnic Pavilion columns.  Other activity includes installation of new storm sewers in the playground seating area and baseball core area, re-location of the NE baseball infield, and installation of parking lot light pole footings.

December 14, 2011 – The masonry contractor has assembled scaffolding and begun to install a brick wall of the Restroom/Concession Building.  Other recent activity includes installation of the NE ballfield backstop posts, forming and pouring of the concrete dugout walls for the NW ballfield, and installation of underground plumbing inside the Restroom/Concession Building foundation.  The electrical contractor has begun installing conduit and wire that will connect to the new ballfield sports lighting. 

December 28, 2011 – Recent activity includes installation of the remaining backstop posts on all four baseball fields; forming and pouring of the concrete dugout walls on the NE ballfield; and completion of the brick fire wall on the Restroom/Concession building.  The electrical contractor has also installed the new underground electrical feed to the Restroom/Concession building.

January 18, 2012 – The demolition contractor has begun removing the existing ballfield lighting poles, and the electrical contractor has completed installation of the new conduit and wire that will connect to the new ballfield lighting.  Other activity includes pouring and forming of concrete planter walls adjacent to the NW and NE ballfields.

February 1, 2012 – Recent activity includes installation of ballfield sideline and outfield fence posts.  On January 26th, materials for the Restroom/Concession building exterior walls were delivered to the site, and the exterior wall installation was completed today.  The remaining building materials, including beams, roofing, interior walls and plumbing fixtures are anticipated to be delivered next week.

February 15, 2012 – Recent activity includes installation of the Restroom/Concession building beams, roof decking and roof insulation. The electrical contractor has begun installing the control panels for the new sports lighting system.

February 29, 2012 – The standing seam metal roof has been installed on the Restroom/Concession building, and the contractor has begun constructing the open-air canopy portion of the building.

March 14, 2012 – Recent activity includes completion of the concession building roof, plus installation of the Picnic Pavilion columns, beams and roof decking. The concrete contractor plans to pour the concession building interior slab tomorrow. The electrical contractor has installed the concrete foundations for the new sports lighting, and plans to begin installing the poles and fixtures next week.

March 28, 2012 – All new sports lighting poles have been installed, and the electrical contractor has begun pulling wire to each of the new poles.  The fencing contractor has completed installation of new backstops on the two north ballfields.  The concrete contractor has begun installing the terrace seating areas on the two north fields and planter curbs in the playground seating area. The masonry contractor has installed the brick column wraps on the Picnic Pavilion, and the carpentry contractor has framed all interior walls of the Restroom/Concession building.

Ballfields  #1 and #2 are expected to be ready for DGYB and DOLLS team practices beginning on April 1st, weather permitting.  Ballfields #3 and #4 are expected be to ready for games on April 23rd.  The soccer fields are already open for play. April 11, 2012 – Recent activity includes installation of concrete sidewalks in the playground seating area, concrete dugout floors on Ballfields #3 & #4, and terrace seating retaining walls on Fields #1 & #2.  All plumbing and electrical conduit within the Restroom/Concession building has been installed, and the carpentry contractor plans to begin drywall installation tomorrow. april
April 18, 2012 – Recent activity includes completion of the backstops and sideline fencing on Ballfields #3 & #4, installation of concrete dugouts on Field #2, and installation of the concrete floor slab at the Picnic Pavilion.  Also, the paving contractor has installed most of the new asphalt pathways south of the baseball fields. april 18
